School Levy

City Year is an education focused, non-profit organization that unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full time service to keep students in schoool and on track to graduate.  City Year Corps members work at Wing Luke as tutors, mentors, and role models. They provide academic support in one-on-one and small group tutoring throughout the day, assist in classrooms, organize celebrations and projects, support the Homework Club, and manage Starfish and Discovery Club afterschool programs (see Student Activities for further details about our after school programs).

Early Learning Team

The Wing Luke Early Learning Team is made up of Kindergarten teachers, specialists who work in the classroom, and the principal.  The ELT meets weekly to plan academic instruction, field trips, and curriculum needs.  With the support of a grant to help Kindergarteners and their families transition into Kindergarten successfully, the ELT team works with local preschools and daycare centers to provide parent and caregiver education.  In preparation for the 2011-12 school year, the ELT welcomed new kindergarteners and their families with an ice cream social and two days assessment of incoming student skills.  In 2011-2012, Wing Luke kindergarten teachers will pilot an on-line assessment tool called WaKIDS.

English Language Development Program

More than one-third of Wing Luke students are identified as English Language Learners (ELLs) who need additional support in developing English language skills.  There are many more students who speak a language other than English at home.  Because of our population, Wing Luke is one of Seattle School District’s Bilingual Center Schools.  We have two full-time English Language Development (ELD) teachers and five Bilingual Instructional Assistants who speak Somali, Vietnamese, Chinese, Spanish, Cambodian, and Cham.  Our ELD teachers serve the ELL students in a variety of ways.  Kindergarten and 1st grade students are in collaborative classrooms where the pod teacher and the ELD teacher co-teach for part of the day.  Other grade levels are taught in small groups during reading and math blocks.  Bilingual IAs tutor students and provide both academic and language support.  For more information, please contact Mrs. Urmenita at elurmenita@seattleschools.org.
Family Support

The Family Support Worker serves Wing Luke’s diverse population of students and families, finding resources in the community, providing needed resources for children and families, and working to develop trusting relationships between home and school.  For more information, please contact Ms. Mitchell at (206) 252.7630.
Homework Club

Homework Club is offered Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:35 a.m. to 9:05 a.m.  Homework Club is reserved for ELL students and other non-ELL students who need additional support in completing homework to be successful in school.  Homework Club is run by our Bilingual Instructional Assistants and City Year tutors.  For more information, please contact Ms. Rusilah at (206) 252.7630.

Special Education

The Wing Luke Special Education Department (SpED) consists of highly qualified teachers. This resource teacher collaborates with general education teachers to provide instruction for students with Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) through inclusion or pull-out model, depending on what best meets the needs of our students.  There is one full-time instructional assistant who supports students in their general education setting so that students can be served in the least restrictive environment.

School Nurse

Keeping students healthy, safe, and ready to learn is the focus of Seattle School nurses. The nurse is a member of Wing Luke’s professional support team and works with teachers, other support staff, students, and parents to identify health concerns and design individualized health plans for students to maximize their learning experience at school.
Tutors

Wing Luke creates a customized schedule of supplementary tutoring to benefit and accelerate individual students. Tutors, some of whom are parents from our community, consult closely with teachers to determine student need, providing extra one-on-one and small group adult guidance.
