    Welcome Families

    Dear Wing Luke Elementary Families,

Welcome to a new and exciting school year! I hope you are having a wonderful summer break, filled with opportunities to learn and grow. I feel very honored to serve the Wing Luke community in the capacity of school principal. I’ve enjoyed hearing about the family atmosphere that exists at our school and my goal is to further strengthen our partnership to ensure the success of all students. The staff and I are thrilled that you have entrusted your child’s education to us. We will make every effort to help your child(ren) achieve academically and socially while in our care!

This year is full of new and exciting experiences at our interim site. The school district and the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) have been busily making adjustments to transform the OVA building (and its surroundings) into the home of Wing Luke Elementary for the next two years. Currently, they are working on developing our drop off and pick up carpool area. Attached to this letter is a diagram that shows the layout. We ask that you look at this carefully to understand where to go when dropping off/picking up your child. As you will also notice, the city will provide two lighted crosswalks, staffed with two crossing guards! We ask that all families use these crosswalks to ensure the safety of all! Although tempting, students may not be dropped off at the main entrance since there is a metro bus stop located there, as well as our bus loading zone.

Kindergarten JumpStart will take place August 20th-24th from 9:00-12:00 PM. A morning snack and lunch will be provided. This is a great opportunity for our Kindergarten students to meet their teachers and classmates while learning important school procedures and class rules/routines. For families who observe Eid, please note that the district sent a public apology and will make sure future programs do not conflict with this holiday in the future. We too, apologize for this conflict and understand if your child cannot attend.

We hope to see everyone at our Wing Luke Open House on September 4th from 4:00-6:00 PM. All families are welcome! This will be an opportunity to tour the building and meet some staff members and volunteers. We are providing this experience so that everyone has an opportunity to familiarize themselves with our new “home” before the school year begins.

Below are some additional school reminders and important dates:

Please be sure your child comes to school each day rested and ready to learn. Attendance and arriving on time are important in order for your child to succeed in school. Students who are consistently tardy are at a clear disadvantage and usually arrive feeling frantic and unprepared. Our school day begins at 7:55 AM and ends at 2:25 PM (M-T-Th-F). Every Wednesday, school will be dismissed 75 minutes early at 1:10 PM. Please make sure students are picked up on time, as teachers and office staff have meetings immediately after dismissal. Given our early start time, if you would like to talk to a teacher, please make an appointment with them for after school.

All students who arrive after 7:55 AM must obtain a tardy slip from the school office prior to entering their classroom. If your child is sick, please report the absence by calling the school office at (206) 252-7630. Our office hours are from 7:25 – 3:30 PM, you can always leave a message on the voicemail. Please make every attempt to schedule family vacations during our set vacation days throughout the year. Extended vacations during the school year are highly discouraged.

All students who arrive at 7:25 AM will be served free breakfast! Based upon eligibility, which is determined by Seattle Public Schools Nutrition Services; school provided lunch will be free, reduced, or full price. Or you can bring your own lunch from home. If you did not receive an application for the free/reduced meals program please pick one up in the office and they are also available online. All free and reduced price lunch applications must be completed, signed, and returned to school by October 1st, 2018. *Please note that if your child is coming to school by bus, they will be served breakfast at the time of their arrival. Classroom teachers will meet their students on the playground at 7:53 AM. The school day will start promptly at 7:55 AM. Any student not in their seat and ready to learn after the 7:55 AM bell rings will be considered late, and will need to see an office staff member to get a tardy slip, with few exceptions.

This year we will have many more students riding school busses. The bus loading zone will be on Beacon Ave. S. near the main entrance of our building. The SPS transportation department will be mailing bus information to families in August. At the end of the school day, all students riding the bus will be escorted to the bus loading zone and/or the pick-up area. If have more than one child riding the bus, please know that your oldest child will be allowed to pair up with his/her younger sibling(s) at their bus line.

If students are not picked up by 2:40 PM (M-T-Th-F) or 1:25 PM (W), they will be escorted to the main office to make phone calls home.

Students in K through 5th grade are required to complete their daily assignments. Please encourage your child to complete these required assignments by providing a specific place, without television and as few distractions as possible. Check and praise your child for their hard work and make sure that their assignments are in their backpack ready to be turned in the following day.
